Being a fit and healthy 40 something, I hadn’t always snored! However during the past couple of years, my fiancé, patient as she was, was beginning to really struggle with the sleep deprivation from my increasingly loud snoring. I was even starting to wake myself up! I therefore soon began to appreciate how difficult a good night’s sleep was becoming for us both. Having purchased and tried every possible remedy on the market, from nasal strips and sprays to sleeping with extra pillows and even buying a new and very expensive bed, my snoring continued.
We definitely did not want to resort to separate bedrooms and I was becoming very frustrated about a problem that I seemingly had no control over. I tried actively reducing my alcohol consumption and even lost a bit of weight to see if this would have any impact on my snoring, but unfortunately it did not. I then went to see my GP, an ENT consultant, and even an Oral Surgeon! The latter seemed quite radical, but I was desperate to stop this very irritating problem.
Following various tests, no medical abnormality (fortunately) was detected and I was advised that surgery would not necessarily guarantee a cure to my problem and that it should be considered as a last resort. The surgeon did, however, encourage me to speak with my dentist regarding an anti-snoring device as a possible option – and thank goodness I did!!
Soon after, I went for my 6 monthly dental check-up with Dr Popat at CCDC and decided to ask his advice – the best advice I ever had! He fully explained to me the possible causes of my snoring and the options available, before resorting to going ‘under the knife’. He took a simple set of teeth impressions and had made a clear mouth guard held together by two plastic arms, which were adjustable to ensure a comfortable and precise fit. OK, when I first used the device I looked like Hannibal Lecter’s best friend and it was a bit uncomfortable, but believe it or not, IT WORKED – MY SNORING STOPPED! My fiancé and I couldn’t believe it! A simple, plastic device had completely changed our life together – thank goodness!
I can honestly say this is one of the best things I have ever done.
